This is why Tierra Whack was the hidden gem find of Sled Island 2017

Calgary, AB – From June 21 – 25, the annual Sled Island music festival took over Calgary for a week of live music and performances at more than 35 different venues across the city.

The best hidden gem find of the 2017 festival, Philly artist Tierra Whack performed a 45 minute set that went off at Broken City at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night.

Sled Island is really special because the festival’s mission is to give shine to artists on the come-up or artists from the underground. And part of that mission involves getting a guest artist to curate part of the line up.

This year, super-producer and Brainfeeder label king pin Flying Lotus was selected as both the festival headliner and guest curator. And Tierra Whack is one of the artists that Flying Lotus personally handpicked to perform on the line up.

Tierra’s SoundCloud has a modest few thousand followers, and only six tracks posted. Her sound fuses melodic PBR&B hooks and vocals with tight-laced rap bars and buzzy track titles like “Saggy Tits” and “Toe Jam”. She has a very distinct sound that’s anchored by drum lines and animated delivery. It’s very much her own brand of booty bounce rap.

And she bounces too, for the record. That’s literally her live set. Terra Whack’s live performance is a show that everyone needs to experience. Because the girl is a force. She’s like a human firecracker on stage, bouncing around and jumping up and down. She hit the stage at Broken City decked out in red and white overalls and big red-framed glasses. She capitalized on her 45 minute slot by getting the crowd into it right from jump. Everyone sardined to the front of the stage and jumped along in unison as Tierra worked her way through her set list.

And after Tierra wrapped her performance, the crowd demanded an encore: “One more song! One more song! One more song!” It was clear the crowd wasn’t going anywhere until they got one finally dose of Tierra. So she came back on stage and finished her set off as Broken City packed in with a mass of sweaty, adoring, newly minted Tierra fans.

Tierra later made a second cameo appearance on stage at Flying Lotus’ show at Palace Theatre. Towards the end of his set, FlyLo announced that he’d chosen one special artist to join him on stage. And then he brought out Tierra, who of course took the opportunity to perform and then dove out into the audience for a crowd surf. Good god. I really hope this girl comes back to Calgary for a solo headlining show.
