6 things that happen when you see Daniel Caesar live
Edmonton, AB – I’ve never actually come across someone who doesn’t like Daniel Caesar. Everyone I know loves him.
Aside from being one of the most talented vocalists of our generation, Daniel is a rare success story. Very few Canadian independent artists make it without backing from a major label. But Daniel got his following without a big label. He came up through the IXXI collective and founded his own Golden Child Recordings imprint.
Daniel got a bit of buzz off his debut EP Prison Break and even more after Pilgrim’s Paradise (which got nominated for a JUNO Award last year). And by the time Daniel released Freudian he was the R&B singer everyone was talking about. So he went on tour. And on Nov. 16 he came to Edmonton to perform at Union Hall.
Daniel Caesar Live: 6 Things You Should Know
1) He’ll put you on to some really good music
“What was her name?” was the question everyone was asking after Snoh Aalegra performed as the opener for the night. The Stockholm born, LA-based vocalist is best known for her appearance on Drake’s album More Life. Boi-1da sampled her “Time” vocals on the album’s closer track “Do Not Disturb.” All OVO affiliations aside, Snoh is fantastic. Her live performance was a breathy, ethereal escape. And she had glittery silver track pants too.
2) He’ll wear a coat because Edmonton is freezing
Daniel came up to Edmonton after performing in Calgary the previous night. And it just so happened the one night he came to town was one of the coldest nights of the year. So he bundled up and opened his set in a big puffer jacket.
3) He’ll start with “Japanese Denim”
“I don’t stand in line/ I don’t pay for clubs/ Fuck that/ But I wait for you.” This is the perfect opening song for a room of people who A) just spent the night waiting in line outside in the freezing cold and B) definitely paid to get into the club. “Japanese Denim” is a quintessential Daniel Caesar song and it set the tone for the night.
4) He’ll perform “Violet”
This is important. This gets its own mention because “Violet” is unrivaled as the best Daniel Caesar song of all time. “Violet” is the song that will make you believe in love. It’s a sun kissed anthem of happiness, daydreams and idealistic romance. It’s pure escapism.
5) You’ll discover just how wholesome he is
Daniel Caesar has a super wholesome image. He’s the Canadian boy next door. And his live performance reflects that. He’s not loud, he’s not braggy and he doesn’t get fired up. He just lets the music speak for itself. At one point a fan propelled her bra on to the stage. And since Daniel Caesar is Daniel Caesar he gracefully picked up the undergarment and discreetly moved it out of sight. He didn’t say anything. He looked neither shocked, disgusted or smug. He just carried on with business as usual.
6) He’ll “Get You” with an encore
It’s not like Daniel was going to leave everyone hanging without performing “Get You”. That’s the song that put everyone on to him. “Get You” is the kind of song they play after last call at the bar when there’s one sappy couple slow dancing in the middle of the dance floor as everyone goes home for the night. It’s essential. Daniel knelt at the front of the stage to sing to his fans. And everyone grasped at his hands (probably) so they could never ever wash their hands ever again knowing they’d brushed hands with the Daniel Caesar.
