My boy gave me a 80 GB HD and I'm trying to reformat it so I can throw xp pro on it, but...
It says it has Linux on it when I attempt to reformat the drive, so I can't simply put my xp pro disk in and reformat, it says I have to convert it first or something to do with Dos.
How do I do this?

cant you right click on it and Format?
if not go into your device manager and view your hard drives. You should be able to do that there.

what you need to download is a tool called "fdisk" it's very small and will fit on a floppy. It's also bootable so have the disk in the drive when you power up and it will ask you if you want to erase partitions. Erase any existing Operating Systems on the HD. Then create 2 partitions say the first at 40GB and the second at well whatever the rest of the drive is (the remaining space). Then format those partitions selecting NTFS.
and once it's formatted take your fdisk out and restart the machine with your XP disk. And it should boot automatically to the XP set up screens. It will ask you were you want to put XP...put it on your first partition.
Then it will install.

plug the harddrive in as NOT the main harddrive
now click on it and format it
linux is free
so if it needs something from them to uninstall it or something than search
on google
