HHC:
When did you first know you wanted to make music?
After recording a song with my older cousins back
in 1986 is when I really decided that I wanted to
be a part of music. I had always collected and listened
to hip-hop back then but that moment I saw a new
way to express myself. My cousins didnt become interested
in the recording aspect but I found a new love.
HHC:
How did you come up with your name, and what does
it mean?
The name Supastition came from the fact that a lot
of people didnt believe in me or ever thought that
I could make it in this industry. So many people
I dealt with in the past felt like I couldnt move
forward without them. In society, some people believe
in superstition and some refuse to. Thats the odds
I face in this game.
HHC:
What was the music scene like in your home town
when growing up?
In Greenville NC, where I am from originally, there
was not a lot of exposure to hip-hop at first other
than what I heard on the radio or saw on Rap City
or Yo! MTV Raps. People in the south have always
been influenced alot by music videos and radio because
we didnt have our own scene at the time. I remember
the b-boys crews used to battle at the local skating
spot back in the day. Greenville had a few local
legends who put tapes (no CDs back then) out but
there hasnt been alot of artists to emerge from
my city and become nationally popular other than
Petey Pablo. But Petey is on a different page and
style of music than myself. WZMB is the local college
station and they have always been a good outlet
to hear underground hip-hop. I was there almost
every weekend freestyling on the air and hanging
out with the DJs. Also, Peasants was the only spot
where real emcees could go to showcase their skills.
HHC: What are your inspirations
when you make music?
My children, my family, and the golden era of hip-hop
are my biggest inspirations. I was inspired by the
likes of Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, KRS One, and basically
every artist that came out during that time. I am
a true fan of hip-hop and I use that to create my
own music.
HHC: What CDs are in your
CD player right now?
Currently, Jay Z - The Black album, Pete Rock &
CL Smooth - The Main Ingredient, M-Phazes beat CDs,
Nicolay - City Lights, and Jackie Mittoo. I mainly
listen to instrumentals all day so you can say I
have a beat fetish.
HHC: What was the first piece
of music that you finished?
My first album, "7 Years of Bad Luck"
was the first project that I ever finished. Everything
else I have done was either plagued by wack labels
or weak production.
HHC: What is your favorite
hip-hop single of all time? Why?
I cant choose a favorite song of all time. That
would be impossible for me to do. Ive been listening
to hip-hop forever and there would be too many songs
to choose from. Even down to the greatest rappers,
I know who was great to me and they were all great
in their own way.
HHC: What was the first hip-hop
LP you bought?
Damn. I cant even remember. I bought so many 12
inches before I bought LPs. It had to be a Run DMC
or Doug E Fresh album though.
HHC: What element(s) do you
bring to hip-hop (emcee, producer, dj, writer, beat
boxer)?
I consider myself an emcee before anything else.
I produce but I havent spent as much time making
beats as I have rhyming so thats secondary to me.
I used to breakdance way back but youd laugh at
my DJ skills though.
HHC:
Who are some of the producers you have worked with?
Producers
ahm Domingo, Jake One, Nicolay, Illmind, Hood, Soul
Supreme, M-Phazes, and a ton of others. Ive worked
with a lot of other producers on other projects
that werent my own.
HHC:
What artist would you like to work with in the future?
Ras Kass, Pharaoh Monche, Black Thought, Gangstarr,
and Big Daddy Kane. I recently finished up a track
with KRS One for his new album so that was definitely
an honor.
HHC:
Why the title 7 Years of bad luck?
Since the age of 18, I had been going through alot
of setbacks personally, financially, and with getting
my music released. "7 Years of Bad Luck"
was my first album and it was released 7 years after
all of the turmoil. The album basically documented
things that I went through during that time. I was
bitter, frustrated, and angry. That was then and
so much has changed.
HHC:
In terms of releasing stuff, what are some new projects
your working on and how can we get a hold of them?
I
have a new album called "Chain Letters"
that will be released on Grit Records in mid-2004,
It features production by Nicolay, M-Phazes, Soul
Supreme, Illmind, and some other cats. I was recently
featured on the Jon Doe album "Meet Jon Doe"
and that available now. Also check for me on the
new KRS One album "Down To A Science."
I am working on more projects but I dont want to
speak on them because anything can happen and it
could jinx it.
HHC:
Last question, we ask this to everyone. What do
you eat for breakfast?
I
havent eaten breakfast years. I cant get up that
early man. It would probably be eggs because I dont
eat beef or pork.
