Toronto, ON – Tika Simone recently announced that her acclaimed The Known UNKnown event series has partnered with the Harbourfront Centre. This means, every 3 months, The Known UNKnown will be held in the venue’s Brigantine Room. The first show in the new venue, Saturday, February 4th, features the immensely talented Rochelle Jordan, the beautiful songstress Shi Wisdom with 88 Days of Fortune (KJ, Spek Won, Abstract Random) as opening acts.

There will also be performances by Savannah Re, J.R. Richy and a very special performance by the Jane and Finch Female Cypher. Tika Simone will be your host for the evening. Click the jump link for the official event flyer. P.S. This event is free!

The Known UNKnown

The Known (Un)Known is one of Toronto’s most buzz-worthy, all-ages independent artist events showcasing the urban music stars of tomorrow. Co-produced and hosted by Tika Simone (MTV’s The Hills Aftershow, hip pop singer-songwriter.) Although people recognize Tika from The Hills Aftershow, few know that she started out as a gifted singer and classically trained violinist.

Noticing that there wasn’t a consistent outlet in the city of Toronto for gifted up-and-coming artists, she took charge. The Known UNKnown is now an event that will be held at the Harbourfront Centre in the prestigious Brigantine Room.

Rochelle Jordan

Rochelle Jordan, who Vibe Magazine has dubbed the “female version of Drake,” is blowing up on the blogospshere thanks to her remix of Drake’s “Marvin’s Room” (being lyrically name-checked by Drizzy hasn’t hurt her either). Check out her debut mixtape, ROJO, which samples a diverse number of artists including Kelis and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.

Shi Wisdom

Shi’s first official release, Love Speak, and accompanying video created a huge buzz for this budding artist. She recently won a 2011Stylus Award.

88 Days of Fortune

This Toronto-based music and multimedia collective, once described as being an urban Broken Social Scene, is comprised of talented soloists and groups that run the gamut from hip hop and electronic to punk.

Here’s the official listing from the Harbourfront Centre’s website:

The Toronto Star discusses K’naan’s displeasure with potential Republican presidental candidate Mitt Romney using his hit single “Wavin’ Flag” as a campaign theme song. Click the jump link to read it.

Toronto, ON – Celebrated Canadian artist K’naan has told Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney to stop waving his flag.

Flush from a crushing victory over Newt Gingrich in Tuesday night’s Florida primary, the Romney campaign unveiled a “new victory song: Wavin’ Flag” by K’naan,” Huffington Post senior political writer Jon Ward tweeted around 9:30 p.m.

A couple of hours later, K’naan sent out his own tweet: “Yo @mittromney I am K’naan Warsame and I do not endorse this message.”

The Canadian singer-songwriter’s “Wavin’ Flag” caught the attention of people around the world when it was made the official song of the World Cup in 2010.

His negative reaction to Romney’s use of the song continues a growing tradition of musicians who are less than pleased having their songs co-opted for conservative political campaigns. This week, Romney’s chief rival found himself the target of a lawsuit by Frank Sullivan, the co-writer of a song being played at recent Gingrich rallies: “Eye of the Tiger.”

Toronto, ON – Shouts to George Strombolopolous Tonight for putting on some Canadian hip-hop last night. With a vast amount of talent to pick from, the show selected 3 of their favourite GTA based artists to appear on the show. JD Era, Luu Breeze and Peter Jackson were invited to drop a few a capella verses to find out who the best rapper in Toronto is, other than Drake. The topic was brought up by a tweet from Amir Johnson.

Special thanks to HipHopCanada contributor and fam Alex “The Can Con Don” Narvaez (@TheCanConDon) for not only producing the segment but also allowing us the exclusive footage.
