Alessio Continues Push For UFC, Beats Healy At Score Fighting Series Event
John Alessio continued his push for a return to the UFC with a unanimous decision win over Ryan Healy at a Score Fighting Series event Friday.
Alessio knocked his opponent to the mat in the first to win the round, but allowed Healy to take over in the second.
With the scorecards seemingly even in the third, Alessio dug deep to score two late takedowns as the Vancouver native picked up his 10th win in 11 fights.
Back With American Top Team, Antonio Silva Primed For UFC Debut
Antonio Silva (16-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has been sidelined since his surprising September loss to Daniel Cormier in the semifinals of Strikeforce's heavyweight grand prix.
A lot has happened since then, including a surgical procedure, a change in training camps and a brand new UFC contract.
It's all for the best, Silva said. Things happen for a reason, and Silva believes his time is now in the octagon.
"I am honored to be in the UFC, where the best fighters in the world are," Silva told MMAjunkie.com (http://www.mmajunkie.com) through a translator. "I want to face the best, and I will give it everything I have."
Silva's first step toward righting the ship was to address a nagging shoulder injury. He underwent the process in November, and he said physical therapy was a complete success.
"My shoulder was really giving me a lot of trouble," Silva admitted. "I was fighting and training in a lot of pain."
Next was a new (old) training camp, as the arrival of Alistair Overeem to Florida's Blackzilians camp led Silva to seek a return to American Top Team. While there has been some speculation that Silva's departure from the Blackzilians came with great tension, "Bigfoot" insists it was simply a professional decision based on the idea that he may one day need to face Overeem, the UFC's current No. 1 heavyweight contender.
"First of all, I was never part of the Blackzilians team," Silva said. "I would go there to see and train with my friends. The moment I heard that they had signed Overeem, I stopped going there. I might fight him in the near future, so I don't want to train with him. I have good friends there, though.
"I came back to ATT. I spoke to Dan Lambert, as he is one of my managers. I have many friends there, and they received me with open arms."
Following Silva's loss to Cormier, Strikeforce officials announced they would disband the heavyweight division. Silva was brought to the UFC and initially was linked to a potential matchup with ex-champ Cain Velasquez. Instead, he now meets Roy Nelson (16-7 MMA, 3-3 UFC) at May's UFC 146 event.
Nelson is just 1-3 in his past four fights and is in desperate need of a positive result. Meanwhile, Silva also hopes to rebound from his recent loss and expects fireworks in the matchup.
"Both of us need a victory," Silva said. "I have been training hard since December, and this fight will be a war.
"Roy is a great and tough fighter. He has fought the best, and I want to start with the right foot in the UFC."
Silva was once the EliteXC heavyweight champion before that organization closed its doors. He was considered one of Strikeforce's top contenders before he was eliminated by Cormier in the grand-prix matchup. Now, with his career again pointed in a different direction, Silva has his sights set on UFC gold.
That said, he refuses to look past Nelson in what he considered one of the most important bouts of his career.
"I will only concentrate on Roy – with the same determination I had with Fedor Emelianenko," Silva said. "All I want to accomplish are good fights for my fans, and I want the UFC happy with me. I need to establish myself in the event. There is a long road to a title shot.
"I want to thank first of all God. I thank the UFC for giving me this opportunity, and I will always give my best when I enter that cage. I want to thank my managers, Alex Davis and Dan Lambert, ATT and Team Nogueira. I will be constantly looking for a knockout or a sub."

The main event will pit UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz against long time rival Urijah Faber, but the card will also feature the final fight of an Octagon legend.
Tito Ortiz announced on late Tuesday night that he will face Forrest Griffin at the July 7 event in Las Vegas.
“July 7th, Vegas MGM UFC 148, it’s on!” wrote Ortiz via his Twitter account..
The former UFC light heavyweight champion has long stated following his los to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in December 2011 that he would step back into the Octagon one final time and his dream match-up was a third fight with Forrest Griffin.
Ortiz and Griffin have split their first two fights, and the trilogy will not only bring to an end the long career of the fighter formerly known as the Huntington Beach Bad Boy, but it will settle the rubber match between two former champions.
For Griffin the fight has to have just as much importance because he’s currently coming off a very tough loss to Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua last August, and will look to get back on track when he faces old foe Tito Ortiz in July.
Originally, the two previous title holders were scheduled to meet in May, but Ortiz suffered an injury that delayed the bout.
Now they are scheduled to meet on July 7 where Ortiz will attempt to go out with one final blaze of glory.
Will Griffin be the one to extinguish that however? The answer will come at UFC 148

Let the stand-up war begin.
Two former champions with a penchant for knockouts will meet at UFC 148, as Rich Franklin squares up with Cung Le.
Verbal agreements are in place for the fight according to UFC officials.
It’s been over a year since former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin stepped foot in the Octagon due to shoulder surgery that sidelined the Cincinnati native.
Franklin was scheduled to meet Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 133 in Philadelphia last August, but suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery. He has been on the shelf for several months dealing with rehabilitation.
With his health returned, Franklin is anxious to get back to action, but he’ll have a tough test ahead of him in July.
It will also mark the return of Franklin to the middleweight division where he ruled as champion, and then left the division after a win over Travis Lutter in 2008.
Former Strikeforce champion Cung Le long dreamed of moving to the UFC and fighting on the biggest MMA stage in the world.
Le got his wish at UFC 139 in 2011. Despite coming up short in an epic battle with former Pride king Wanderlei Silva, the lifelong martial artist promised to return again to the Octagon.
He now has a date and an opponent and Le will not only look to bounce back from a loss, but he’ll try to do so against a former UFC champion.
Franklin vs. Le is the latest fight to be announced for the UFC 148 fight card, which will be headlined by Ultimate Fighter Live coaches Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber settling their rivalry once and for all.

Gray Maynard vs. Clay Guida Set As Five Round Main Event For UFC On FX 3
UFC on FX 4 in Atlantic City now has a main event as former lightweight title contender Gray Maynard meets Clay Guida in a five round main event.
UFC officials announced the new fight on Sunday.
The bout between Maynard and Guida has long been rumored, but only as of this weekend did it become official and now it gets main event status to boot.
Gray Maynard returns to the Octagon for the first time since his title fight loss to UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar at UFC 136.
Maynard battled Edgar twice in 2011, and will now look to climb back into the title picture with a five-round battle ahead of him in June.
Facing Maynard in Atlantic City will be fellow lightweight title contender Clay Guida.
On several occasions, Guida has seemed to be one win away from a title shot, but has come up just short. Last year, Guida lost a decision to Benson Henderson at the inaugural UFC on Fox event, but now he hopes to get back in the hunt with a fight against another top ten lightweight.
Maynard and Guida will face off in a five-round main event for the UFC on FX 4 fight card headed to Atlantic City.
It will be the UFC’s first appearance there since UFC 53 back in 2005.

Despite Recent Loss, Clay Guida Has No Plans To Leave Lightweight Division
Fan favorite, Clay ‘The Carpenter’ Guida (29-12) is set to step back into the Octagon on June 22, 2012 against former contender Gray Maynard in the main event of an upcoming UFC on FX show.
Guida enters the bout on a No. 1 contender loss to current champ Ben Henderson last November at the first UFC on FOX event.
Despite facing a physically bigger opponent in Henderson, Guida has no plans on leaving the lightweight division like other fighters who have failed to find success in the past.
During a segment of “The MMA Show with Mauro Ranallo” Guida talked about his loss to Henderson, the title bout between Henderson and Frankie Edgar, plus more.
“I haven’t felt outmuscled even against Henderson – he just outpositioned me. Until that happens I don’t have a reason to go to 145. I’ve made my stake in the lightweight division and on June 22 I’ll make my stake even deeper. I’ve been here a long time and I want my lightweight belt before I make any moves.”
Also featured on Monday’s podcast were Bellator color commentator Jimmy SMith, Score Fighting Series fighters Forrest Petz and John Alessio, Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva’s manager Alex Davis, and media personalities Ben Fowlkes and John Ramdeen.

Chris "The Polish Hammer" Horodecki Set To Make His Featherweight Debut
After fighting professionally for seven years at lightweight with much success, Chris "The Polish Hammer" Horodecki is set to make his featherweight debut at Bellator 64 in Windsor on April 6th.
The former IFL and WEC contender is 18-3 in his career at lightweight but has decided to make the shift to 145-pounds for his upcoming fight against Mike "The Marine" Richman. In my opinion, it is a very wise and exciting decision for the future of this young, elite fighter.
Wakabayashi was able to chat with Horodecki last week at the Adrenaline Training Center in London, Ontario.
"First fight at featherweight yes. All my fights have been at 155 but I need to make that transition, you know I feel making 155 was too easy and you know what, these guys at 155 are getting really, really big man so. There's no reason I shouldn't be a contender at 145." Horodecki told Bleacher Report MMA from his gym in London.
Horodecki is and has been a top contender in Canada at 155-pounds throughout his seven-year professional career. During his time in the IFL and WEC he also tangled with some of the best lightweights in the world such as Anthony Njoukuani, Danny Downes and UFC contender Donald Cerrone.
In his next fight on April 6th, he faces Minnesota native, former cast member of the UFC's The Ultimate Fighter and U.S. Marine Mike Richman. Facing the United States' elite tough guys is nothing new to Horodecki.
"Actually my last opponent Mike Corey is a Marine or former Marine with the military, and I have also had another Marine in the IFL Josh Odom that I competed against."
This time it, will be a bit different for the London, Ontario native and part owner of Adrenaline Training Center.
"I've done pretty well, they keep lining me up with these Marines so, but this time they're on our territory on Canadian soil so I got my fans with me."
Horodecki defeated Odom via unanimous decision, and fought Corey a controversial draw last November in a fight that many thought he had done enough to win. He remains undefeated against the United States servicemen.
Corey has since dropped down to featherweight as well, and is currently in the second round of the Bellator FW tournament. Horodecki is watching the tournament closely, and shared his thoughts on who he thinks may come out on top.
"A close friend of mine Ronnie Mann was fighting in that tournament, fought Mike Corey, who I was training with the week previous so it was kinda a tough one to watch but Mike did really good, he's a grinder. He's got a tough fight next as he's fighting Daniel Strauss in Windsor. It's gonna be on the same card as me. He's kinda the sleeper right now"
Corey trains at Team Curran in Chicago with head trainer and MMA veteran Jeff Curran and current Bellator featherweight champion Pat Curran who recently won the title with an incredible highlight reel knockout of Joe Waren.
Team Curran shares a great training relationship with Horodecki and Team Tompkins dating back a few years. Horodecki touched on the history of that valuable relationship.
"We've been training together for the past seven or eight years, going back and forth. When Shawn moved to Las Vegas it kinda slowed down a bit. But now we've decided to get the team going again, the connection and myself and Mark Hominick made the trip out last week."
"It was great man, it's great to have that alliance again, we are going out there again in a week and then Jeff Curran's coming back and he's gonna be cornering myself in my fight at Bellator in Windsor. He's also going to be cornering Mark Hominick in UFC Atlanta in April"
I'm looking forward to Horodecki's debut on April 6th, and a steady climb up the featherweight division in 2012.
Alex Ricci Reflects On Big Win At The Score Fighting Series 3 In Hamilton
Alex Ricci improved his unblemished record to 5-0 at the Score Fighting Series 3 in devastating fashion. He has finished all of his opponents by form of knockout in the second round coming to this bout, but this time was different.
It only took a minute and forty four seconds to knockout the dangerous Adrenaline MMA prospect Iraj Hadin.
The left hook rattled Iraj in the first, as he fell to the canvas, but Ricci showed his fighter instincts as he pounced on his prey to land a few added punches when Yves Lavigne stepped in to stop the fight. Mmacanada.net caught up with the rising star hailing out of Woodbridge Ontario shortly after his big win. Mmacanada.net: How was your training camp going into this fight?
Alex Ricci: My training camp consisted of 8 solid weeks of really hard training. We focused on a few different situational techniques before this fight for my opponent and it came through in the end of the day.
Mmacanada.net: Did you enforce your game plan and did it work perfectly for you?
Alex Ricci: My game plan went just according to plan, yeah. Me and my coaches work, these guys work hard as I do everyday in the gym busting my ass off.
Mmacanada.net: How did this win feel for you?
Alex Ricci: This win was extremely important for me, I was going against an extremely tough opponent, I am just really glad everything fell through like it should. Anything can happen when you step through that cage so you have prepare yourself for anything. You have to believe in yourself at the end of the day, if you do not believe in yourself you are not going to make it, you know?
Mmacanada.net: What’s next for you?
Alex Ricci: I’m going to take it easy for the next few weeks, back to the gym, continue to make myself a more complete MMA fighter. Still have a lot to learn, still have to develop my wrestling and my grappling skills to complement my striking and take it one day at a time.
