Eddie Alvarez Sits Cageside Beside Dana White At UFC On FOX 3

Former Bellator Fighting Championship lightweight title holder Eddie Alvarez was cageside for Saturday nights (May 5, 2012) UFC on FOX 3 event at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Alvarez had his seat next to UFC president Dana White for the main event lightweight bout between Nate Diaz and Jim Miller.

White has stated that he likes Alvarez, which is code that he wants to sign the former Bellator champ. With the UFC signing former Bellator middleweight title holder Hector Lombard, Alvarez can’t be too far behind.

Roger Gracie will make his middleweight debut this summer against former UFC fighter Keith Jardine at a Strikeforce event scheduled for July.

Sources close to the situation confirmed the bout to MMAWeekly.com on late Sunday evening. MMAFighting.com first reported the match-up.

Following a stint at both heavyweight and light heavyweight, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace Roger Gracie will make the move down to 185 pounds.

A master on the ground, Gracie suffered his first loss when he stepped way up in competition for his last fight taking on former Strikeforce champion Muhammed ‘King Mo’ Lawal. The fight ended with Gracie being TKO’d, but it also served as a wake-up call to make the move down to middleweight where he won’t be giving up nearly as much size and power.

Welcoming Gracie to the middleweight division will be former Ultimate Fighter competitor Keith Jardine, who will be making only his second trip to 185 pounds.

Jardine stepped up on short notice to face Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold in January, and was shut down in the first round.

Prior to that fight, Jardine had gone 2-0-1 with the draw coming in a fight he took on less than two weeks notice against former Strikeforce champion Gegard Mousasi.

Now he faces one of the most dangerous fighters in all of MMA on the ground as he meets Roger Gracie in July.

The July Strikeforce event has yet to receive a date or location, but it will take place in the summer month where several other big fights are expected to land as well.

In the combat sports world, it can be a lonely place on top, especially if you’re a woman. Being a woman in combat sports, it’s difficult enough to get the big paydays, but getting the exposure to build up a strong fanbase can be a monumental task.

Enter Strikeforce bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, who at just 5-0, has made a huge splash in the sport. Rousey’s outspoken nature on top of being a world-class athlete has stirred up the MMA community and now the fans are gradually paying more attention to female fighters.

Long a critic of female fighting, UFC president Dana White has even been singing a different tune of late due to the emergence of the former Judo Olympian.

“She’s a rock star,” White said. “She’s been fantastic. She’s been killing it for us. I just hope that we can get some really good fights for her.”

Despite Rousey being a team player, White feels like she is on top of a division without enough big fights before her to make her an international superstar. Although she has a fight with Sarah Kaufman on tap, the lack of big fights for Rousey at 135 has been troubling for Strikeforce matchmaker Sean Shelby.

Although White hopes for a different outcome, he feels like Rousey will inevitably be in a similar situation to the great, undefeated boxer Lucia Rijker. The Dutch boxer was the top female boxer in the world, but had even the best opponents backing out of big fights and making it troublesome for her to become an established superstar.

“Unfortunately I think (Rousey) is going to be the Lucia Rijker of MMA. For those of you that don’t know who Lucia Rijker was, she’s the female boxer that was really the best in the world. You heard of Christie Martin and Laila Ali and all these other people, they wouldn’t fighter. Nobody wanted to fight Lucia Rijker. She was sparring with guys. She was probably the best female boxer ever and nobody knows who the hell she is.”

Is Ronday Rousey headed for the same fate?

Tyron Woodley To Meet Nate Marquardt For Strikeforce Welterweight Title In July

Former top UFC fighter Nate Marquardt will finally make his Strikeforce and welterweight debut in July, and it will be in a title matchup. He will compete for Nick Diaz's old Strikeforce welterweight championship against a SF veteran, Tyron Woodley. MMA Weekly has it:

The main event for the upcoming Strikeforce event in July is almost set as Nate Marquardt will make his promotional debut against Tyron Woodley with the vacant welterweight title on the line.

Sources close to the match-up confirmed the fight to MMA Weekly on Monday with verbal agreements in place for the July showdown.

Marquardt (31-10-2) was released from the UFC last June after a TRT issue prevented him from fighting Rick Story. He then signed with BAMMA, but never competed under their banner and was let out of his contract a few months later. Strikeforce signed him a couple of months ago, and this bout had been rumored ever since.

Woodley is undefeated at 10-0 in his career, eight of those wins coming in Strikeforce. His last bout was a split decision win over Jordan Mein in January.

Gilbert Melendez Wants To Fight The Best, But He’s Out On A Strikeforce Island

When Zuffa took over Strikeforce, they raided the roster, moving most of the top tier fighters to the UFC. Strikeforce champions Jake Shields, Dan Henderson, Alistair Overeem, and Nick Diaz quickly made the jump into the Octagon.

The lone man left out on an island? Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez.

There was a time, when it looked to everyone that the working relationship between Zuffa and Showtime wasn’t working at all, that Melendez was going to make the move alongside his fellow champions.

Showtime became a partner with Strikeforce prior to Zuffa’s buyout. The premium cable network maintained much more control over the product than was typical for a Zuffa broadcast partner, which had become a sticking point. It appeared that a parting of ways was unavoidable.

“We do want to bring Gilbert Melendez over and we’re looking at it right now,” UFC president Dana White said last October, when the Strikeforce/Showtime partnership was in the red zone.

Shortly after White made his sentiments public, the wheels began rolling again, eventually leading to Zuffa working out a deal to keep Strikeforce on Showtime.

One major piece of the puzzle was to keep Melendez, Strikeforce belt affixed firmly around his waist, leading the charge on Showtime.

White announced the renewed deal to keep Strikeforce on the network, saying that Melendez was happy to remain as the promotion’s centerpiece, and that the UFC president would become much more hands-on.

“I will dive into this thing and I will make it right. I will make the fighters who fight over there not worry about what’s going on in the UFC,” said White. “I’m gaining more control over Strikeforce. We’re going to have a lot of cool things happening over the next few weeks.”

It all sounded great in theory, but didn’t quite work out the way the plan was initially laid out.

White tried to live up to his end of the bargain, jumping in, making suggestions to help ramp up Strikeforce; going as far as saying that Strikeforce would not be a second-tier promotion. He intended for it to eventually be considered on equal footing with the UFC.

Despite his efforts, there were powers that be at Showtime seeing things in a different light, eventually leading White to back away.

That left Melendez stranded, trying to prove himself to be the top lightweight in the world with little opposition considered worthy enough for him to stake his claim.

Melendez is now slated to face Josh Thomson for a third time on May 19 in San Jose, Calif. Thomson is a good fighter – one of only two men to hand Melendez a loss – but Melendez dominated him the last time they met. Thomson is also just one fight removed from his last loss, to a fighter that Melendez finished in the first round.

Thomson is a solid opponent, but not one that will prove Melendez’s point. White, and everyone else, knows it.

“Gilbert Melendez is a Strikeforce fighter and he’s been great (to deal with),” said the UFC president. “He wants to come over here (to the UFC) and he wants to challenge himself against the best, and I know a lot of other people want to see it too, but he’s in that Strikeforce deal.”

It’s not that White didn’t try to do something more for Melendez; he did. He tried to get former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion B.J. Penn to face Melendez under the Strikeforce banner, but Penn has been in a semi-retired state since his last loss, still trying to determine whether he will ever fight again. He turned down the offer to face Melendez.

“The thing that sucks for Gilbert, that’s disappointing, I was 100-percent fired up and gung ho to go over there and work on Strikeforce. The whole thing fell apart. I know he’s bummed out about it, and other people are too, but it is what it is. It just didn’t work out.”

The sting is surely even worse for Melendez now, witnessing the likes of Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard signing with the UFC, and former Bellator lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez sitting cageside at a recent UFC with White, being courted to move to the Octagon once his current contract is up.

Citing a lack of enough heavyweight talent to run two separate divisions, the UFC also assimilated the Strikeforce heavyweight division into its folds, rubbing more salt in the wound.

And don’t think it’s a money issue for Melendez. He made that clear when talk about moving him into the UFC several months ago had reached a fever pitch. Everyone wants to make more money, but he’s not upset with the money under his current contract.

“Money doesn’t really mean nothing at this point; my money’s good,” Melendez told MMAWeekly.com. “I’m happy with my money. If (White) told me to come fight for the same price, I would do it.

“Either way, it’s inevitable. I’m coming for all the 55-pounders and I really want to prove I’m No. 1. Part of being No. 1 is beating everyone, every match-up. I think I can beat every style out there.”

Gilbert Melendez just wants to be afforded the opportunity to prove what he already believes, that he is the best lightweight fighter on the planet. But it looks like he’ll have to wait a while longer, wading the cloudy waters of Strikeforce.

Strikeforce Champ Ronda Rousey To Defend Against Sarah Kaufman In August

Ariel Helwani from MMA Fighting is reporting that Strikeforce women's Bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey will make her first title defense against Sarah Kaufman in August. No date or location has yet been announced for the event but it is expected to air on Showtime.

The 25-year-old Rousey (5-0, 5 submissions) took the title from Miesha Tate at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey in March. Former champ Kaufman (15-1, 10 KO's) beat fellow Canadian Alexis Davis on that same card by majority decision. Kaufman has won three straight since losing the belt to Marloes Coenen in October, 2010.

The build up to Tate vs. Rousey featured a lot of trash talk from the then-champion to the effect that Rousey was being rushed into a title shot she didn't deserve. Her ligament-snapping performance against Tate should silence that line of attack.

Rousey vs Kaufman promises to be a classic grappler vs. striker confrontation that could test Rousey's chin if the former Team USA Judo Olympian is unable to impose her ground game on Kaufman early.

Gerald Harris Replaces Marcus Aurelio At Legacy Fighting Championship 11

Gerarld Harris (20-4) has replaced fellow big-show vet Marcus Aurelio (21-9) at next week's Legacy Fighting Championship 11 event.

LFC promoter Mick Maynard today confirmed the news with MMAjunkie.com (http://www.mmajunkie.com) and said Harris has signed a new multi-fight deal with the Texas-based promotion.

According to Maynard, Aurelio didn't secure his fight license in time for the May 11 event, which airs live on HDNet.

Harris now fights recent Strikeforce fighter and fellow welterweight Mike Bronzoulis (13-4-1) at the event, which takes place at Houston's Arena Theater. The fight is one of seven on the HDNet-televised main card.

Harris, who went 3-1 in the UFC before a surprising release from the promotion in 2010, lost his first post-UFC fight (to eventual UFC signee James Head). However, he's since won three fights, which include a Tachi Palace Fights win over Anthony Ruiz, a DREAM.17 victory over Kazuhiro Nakamura, and a LFC 10 win over Eric Davila. All three of the victories came via decision.

James Thompson Outlast Bobby Lashley At Super Fight League 3

In the main event at Super Fight League 3 in New Delhi, India, James “The Colossus” Thompson won a unanimous decision over former Strikeforce fighter Bobby Lashley in front of more than 10,000 fans. It was Thompson’s second fight in the SFL after destroying Bob Sapp in the inaugural show.

Despite Lashley’s meteoric rise to fame since his introduction into the world of MMA, the success that he has had against upper-level competition has been short of extraordinary. There was a certain level of back and forth in this match, but in the end, Lashley was exhausted and visibly beaten when the scorecards were read.

The striking and grappling in the match moved at the approximate speed of smell, with both fighters running out of steam near the end of the second round.

All three judges scored the fight 29-28 for Thompson, who seems to have found a home at the top of SFL cards. The win was Thompson’s third in four fights, which included a no contest, while Lashley ended a two-fight winning streak with the loss.

Heavyweights Matt Mitrione & Rob Broughton Official For UFC On FOX 4

A heavyweight bout between TUF 10 alum Matt Mitrione (5-1) and British fighter Rob ‘The Bear’ Broughton (15-7-1) has been officially added to this Augusts upcoming UFC on FOX 4 card.

The promotion announced the bout on Wednesday at UFC.com.

UFC on Fox 4 is expected to take place on August 4, 2012 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. It’s likely this heavyweight clash will headline the undercard for the event.

Mitrione has not fought since a decision loss to Cheick Kongo last October at UFC 137. The defeat was the first of Mitrione’s career, going 5-0 as a pro all inside the UFC Octagon. His last win took place in June of last year, with a second round knockout of Christian Morecarft at the UFC on Versus 4 event.

Broughton has lost two straight and is just 1-2 in his UFC career. The English fighter lost decisions to Phil De Fries at UFC 138 and to Travis Browne at UFC 135, while winning his debut by submission at UFC 120 against Vinicius Queiroz. ‘The Bear’ had been slated to appear at the UFC 142 card against Edinaldo Oliveira but was forced off the card.

Short notice was the way for John Alessio to get back in the UFC, but he’ll look to solidify his spot when he returns at UFC 148.

The Canadian fighter who now trains out of Las Vegas will meet heavy handed wrestler Shane Roller on the July 7 card.

UFC officials announced the fight on Thursday.

Alessio had been campaigning for some months for a return to the UFC, and finally got his chance when an injury opened up a slot on the UFC 145 card in Atlanta.

Despite his best efforts, Alessio came up short against fellow Canadian Mark Bocek, and now looks to rebuild into the win column come July.

Facing Alessio will be former WEC lightweight contender Shane Roller, who is looking to stop a three-fight skid in the UFC.

Roller won his UFC debut in emphatic fashion with a huge knockout over Thiago Tavares, but then went onto lose subsequent bouts to Melvin Guillard, T.J. Grant, and Michael Johnson.

With the cut line looming, Roller will look to stave off a potential exit from the UFC when he faces Alessio in July.
