To much anticipation, the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards aired tonight with host DJ Khaled leading the way… and Cardi B and Kendrick Lamar collecting most of the hardware. The event actually took place in June but the winners aren’t publicly revealed until the night of the TV broadcast.
One thing people were looking forward to was Eminem’s 2017 “BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher” verse which zeroed in on President Donald J. Trump. This wasn’t the first time Em has gone at a sitting President, with “Mosh” taking a huge swing at George W. Bush’s administration. But this hits just as hard, if not harder, and in a different, raw format, coming at a very volatile time in history… largely because of the unpredictability of the Trump presidency. Trump is currently facing a barrage of constant criticism, even from senior members of his own party, and has many Americans (and citizens of the world) unsure of what the future will look like.
Eminem pulls no punches and you can feel the raw emotion and anger in his delivery. He even tells his fans that our Trump supporters that’s he drawn a line in the sand. It’s either you support Shady or you support Trump. It can’t be both. And if you can’t decide, he’ll help you choose. He really hasn’t lost a step in his lyrical game and this should remind people why he’s one of the great rappers of all time. Take it in, share it. It’ll be interesting to see if Trump has the cojones to attack someone like Eminem with his usual tweet-assault approach.
Along with Eminem’s contribution, Ottawa’s own Belly was also featured in a “Hip Hop Awards Cypher,” alongside Fat Joe and Cyhi the Prynce. We don’t have a YouTube link for that yet but click here to check it out on BET’s website. Click the jump link below for a full list of nominees and winners.
