A few hours ago, Brampton artist Bane dropped a brand new banger he did in collaboration with Edeez titled “Back and Forth.”
“Back and Forth” is a track about living the day-to-day in the West End. It’s a look into the struggles Bane deals with, and the low points he’s had to reach in order to appreciate the high points.
Bane’s always had an extremely raw delivery (and “Cocaine Art Gallery” is probably still one of the rawest tracks of all time – facts!), but he’s really been honing in on a more anecdotal style of delivery lately.
In addition to rapping about his struggles with the females, Bane opens up about the challenges of going without seeing his daughter, sleeping on his mom’s couch, and plotting his revenge against the people he had to cut off.
The track itself was laced a while ago, but ended up getting shelved. Bane revisited it recently with Edeez, who wound up cooking up an entirely new beat for the song. Listen to “Back and Forth” and scope our in-depth interview with Bane below.
Q&A: Bane
HipHopCanada: Start off by telling me what this track means to you on a personal level.
Bane: This song – to me – is about how our life is in West. We’re always on the move around the ends… it’s like we’re on tour. Everywhere we go we just keep real and live our lives, and we end up making it live.
HipHopCanada: Let’s talk about that first verse. Who did you have to cut off and how are you plotting your revenge?
Bane: In this city a lot of people fake f**k with you. And if you can’t keep it 100, I’ll just cut that off. I don’t need that fake energy, you get me? The outcome of great music is my revenge. Once they really really start to f**k with me, that’s how I’ll get my revenge. It’s like a “told yah” type of thing.
HipHopCanada: I love that. Now explain the title “Back and Forth” to me, and what it represents to you.
Bane: “Back and Forth” is more then just the words on the hook, but it applies to my everyday life. Sometimes I go “back and forth” on road, to work, in arguments with my shawtys… all that. Sometimes you even gotta take a step back to go forth in life.
HipHopCanada: I feel like on some level “Back And Forth” refers to the duality of everything in life… even like… the girl who’s not sweet but wants you to be her sugar daddy. Or even the contrast between going from sleeping on mom’s couch to touring.
Bane: Yeah. Shit really ain’t sweet in life. And that’s where the taking a step back to go forth comes in. With the shawty who want me to play sugar daddy, we gon’ argue and go back and forth on why I should and why I’m not going to. Even still staying at my mom’s while feeling like I’m on tour; going back and forth from my home life to my road life.
HipHopCanada: You’ve been channeling a lot of feels in your music lately, and your lyrics are getting a lot more anecdotal. Like even when you’re rapping about not being able to see your daughter and stuff.
Bane: I’ve been tryna keep it as real as possible in my raps. It’s easier for me to talk about my day-to-day life. So if I rap about my daughter it’s all facts. But then again… that’s why shit ain’t sweet.
HipHopCanada: What was the process for putting this song together? I feel like it was a quick write because there is so much raw emotion here.
Bane: This is actually an older song off the project. Had it chillin’ for a min. Then Edeez made a full new beat around it. But yeah, the recording prep was real fast for this joint. Already had the idea. Just needed to fill in words.
