Toronto has always been a breeding ground for exceptional talent, and artists like Kwazzi are here to show how multi dimensional the city really is. With his recent release iNJOY finally out on all streaming platforms, Kwazzi has been able to solidify his own sound and stand out from the rest of the city.
iNJOY is a very diverse 6-track project complete with bumblegum bounce records like the opening cut “Instagram” as well as harder club records like “4TheBlock.” The first two records on the project shed light on society’s dependence on social platforms like Instagram and Tinder. They are light to the listen and really ease the audience into the meat and potatoes of the project. The third track, “Level Up” is a confident up tempo track with a high production value which transitions in to the back half of the album perfectly.
The second half of iNJOY is where Kwazzi really finds his stride and reaffirms the listener of his ability to craft songs. Track four, “No One Else,” which was produced by longtime collaborator and labelmate Guapo is definitely a fan favourite. Kwazzi is accompanied by Missy Yee and JETSET who really compliment Kwazzi’s delivery and give the song the added flare that it needed. The two records that follow “No One Else” are possibly my two favourite cuts off the album. “4TheBlock” shows a more aggressive side of the artist, letting the listener know that he can hit hard if need be and the closing song, “Lotto” is infectious to say the least.
After seeing the project develop first hand, it is definitely incredible to see how far Kwazzi has come with this release. With his song writing ability on full display, the and the unique cadences of his rhymes as well as the diversity of songs on the album Kwazzi can be defined as the Chance The Rapper of Toronto. I’m sure there is more to come from this budding artist, but for now, take a listen to iNJOY.
