Never before has it been a better time to be a producer in the music industry. With an overall newfound appreciation for the minds behind our favourite music, Vancouver has seen its’ own influx of creatives reveal themselves and step into their respective light. It’s been a few months since Vancouver producer/artist Larry Luxx has released new content, but most people still recognize him as an established part of Vancouver’s rising scene. Known for creating distinct and individual remixes, he always finds a way to turn a good track into a completely new and revitalized sound.
You’ll find yourself constantly surprised with his music, as he generally breaks out of the boundaries of genres and constantly pushes himself to create unheard sounds. Following his recent hiatus from releasing content, he dropped a remix for “Mask Off” this previous week. It might be one of his most impressive tracks yet. We had to catch up with the producer to talk about what he’s been up to, and where he’s hoping to go with his career in the future. We’re silently hoping that it will include more remixes like this.

Q&A: Larry Luxx
HipHopCanada: Thanks for catching up with us. The release of your “Mask Off” remix follows a six-month break for you from music. What kind of things have you been going through in the recent months?
Larry Luxx: I’ve been going through a lot lately with trying to find a progressive version of my sound, and also a way to present it to an audience – who I feel needs so much more nowadays other than just a great song.
HipHopCanada: How do you feel like you’ve grown as an artist and producer during that time?
Larry Luxx: I feel like I’ve grown more a custom to compromising and working with other artists. In the past years I’ve been stubborn and it’s shown, but with new music coming I’m sure you will hear the changes that I’m talking about.
HipHopCanada: “Mask Off” sounds atmospheric and big – with a lot of space for the sounds to resonate. How did the track come about?
Larry Luxx: I really do love the original version of that song. But I just felt I could go somewhere else with the vocals and just take the song to a different place – so I did what I do best.
HipHopCanada: You’ve become a wiz at remixing popular tracks in really unique ways. How do you pick a track to work with, and do you have any kind of formula for that?
Larry Luxx: There isn’t too much of a formula to what I do. If I like the lyrics and the melody the artist provides, I will try to take it and mix it with my style of atmospheric/emotional production.
HipHopCanada: People feel a lot of different ways about being an artist on the West Coast. How has your environment influenced you and your music, if at all?
Larry Luxx: I feel like living on the West Coast is great as a regular citizen. Although, on the music side of things there is obvious struggles every artist on the West Coast faces. Things do seem to be looking up at a rapid pace.
HipHopCanada: What’s the biggest challenge that you’ve faced thus far, creatively?
Larry Luxx: My biggest challenge creatively will always be trying to get across to people that I can’t just make one type of music and that, as a producer, that would be completely pointless.
HipHopCanada: What are some goals you have for this year, and how do you see things progressing?
Larry Luxx: My goals this year are to just work with more talented artists from all over, including some local artists, and just continue to build my sound.
HipHopCanada: What kind of things do you have in the works, and can fans look forward to more music soon?
Larry Luxx: I like to keep most things with a little mystery, so I won’t talk about what exactly I have coming and when exactly it is coming – but expect lots of music this summer including solo work and songs I’ve produced for various artists.
