Toronto-based latin hip-hop crew, Los Poetas, are gearing up for the release of their forthcoming studio project, Ajpu. A few days ago they released the project’s lead single, “Wam Bam,” which explores a post-apocalyptic narrative that perhaps echos inspiration from today’s current political climate.
The group also released the supporting visuals for “Wam Bam,” teaming up with 3rdEye (aka Manolo) of Diamantt Films to see their vision through.
“‘Wam Bam’ is set in a broken and disheveled industrial world where it’s inhabitants are forced to fend for themselves from an invisible yet oppressive enemy.”
Unlike previous Los Poetas releases that we’ve covered, this one features the group’s newest member, Afantú. He joined Louwop, Che Uno, Vancouver-based producer Vago, and Toronto’s own DJ Grouch.
You can find “Wam Bam” now on all major streaming platforms. Check out the video below along with more details about the new album courtesy of the “Wam Bam” press release.
Brand New Los Poetas Track/Video Wam Bam released today
“The new album, entitled ‘Ajpu’ bridges the gap between ancestral warnings and future divinations, putting forward a Pan-Latinx sound that straddles both the traditional and modern. The Ajpu is a Nahual, Mayan Spirit, representing musicians, artists, observers, communicators and writers – and the adopted Nahual of Los Poetas.
Originally their collective musical gaze was on 1970s Nuyork Salsa and the era of boom bap Hip-Hop that would come out of New York two decades later; but now Los Poetas have gone further back and deeper into their genetic memory. Now, MCs Louwop, Che Uno and Afantú, Vancouver-based producer Vago, DJ Grouch and their backing band of Pan-Latinx master musicians, look beyond the music of their parent’s generation towards their ancestors — and through them, the indigenous roots of spoken word, drum and melody and the bridge to today where we call them rap, beats and hooks.”
