Earlier this month, Ottawa vocalist Vi released “Fool’s Gold” as her debut, first-ever single release.
Produced by Craig Betts, “Fool’s Gold” was written about Vi’s past relationship. Basically, another female came into the picture pretending to be something she wasn’t in an attempt to break apart Vi’s relationship with her man.
The song speaks to how so many people have motives that aren’t genuine. People present as a certain type of way, but sometimes it’s not who they really are. It’s like fool’s gold, which is basically the ultimate geological poser; trying to be glitzy and ritzy and gold, when ultimately it isn’t.
That’s how some people are, too. Check out “Fool’s Gold,” and scope our Q&A with Vi below.
Q&A: Vi
HipHopCanada: Start off by telling me what this song means to you on a personal level.
Vi: This song really resonates with me because it’s something that I actually went through. I had to take that hurt and rise above it. It helped me let go of that negative and create it into something positive that will push me forward. Finally releasing it feels liberating because I’m speaking my truth and my story that I hope others can relate too.
HipHopCanada: Talk to me about the situation that inspired you to pen this one.
Vi: “Fool’s Gold” was inspired by my past relationship and how I got pushed aside for another person who isn’t who they say they are… neither was he. She was a predator in my relationship and was just hoping on the downfall so she could have him for herself.
HipHopCanada: I feel like this whole build-up of events is so relatable; not even just from a relationship standpoint. It’s about people who aren’t genuine and how they can just mess things up.
Vi: There are a lot of good people out there but there are also a lot of bad people who disguise themselves as a good people. Sometimes you have to experience those people long enough to realize who they really are and what their intentions are. Not all that glitters is gold.
HipHopCanada: Who produced this and how this that collaboration come about?
Vi: Craig Betts produced this track and is actually producing my whole EP that’s coming up, as well. My managers Mehdi Jourabbaf and Joey Calvo know Craig and thought we would be a good match. And I’m honestly really happy with the work we’re doing!
HipHopCanada: Talk to me about the significance of releasing this particular song as your debut release.
Vi: I pretty much have a full album of songs ready but “Fool’s Gold” is really symbolic of my transition as an artist and a young woman. It’s the starting point of a new chapter in my life.
