roc lee challenges the status quo of Toronto’s sound with “KAWAIIGOD”

“KAWAIIGOD,” the new release from roc lee is the perfect example of how diverse the music scene really is in Toronto. With such a vast variety of cultures and influences in the city, it is inevitable that the music, which comes out of Toronto, is as diverse and intricate as the people living in it. Roc lee, a Korean born, rapper who now resides in Toronto after spending a year living in Atlanta, is the perfect example of how truly diverse the Toronto music landscape really is.

“KAWAIIGOD”, is an aggressive and raw release, which puts the rapper’s personality at the forefront. It differs vastly from his previous releases, like the melodic “Nothing New,” and really puts the rappers diversity on display. Sonically, the track resembles something like XXXTentacion’s recently platinum single “Look At Me,” with a very grungy bassline and a high-energy lead rap vocal, something that is not typical of today’s Toronto hip-hop.

People often try to label Toronto as having its own sound, but artists like roc lee are a testament to the fact that there is much more to offer in the city than just the ambient pads, lo-fi drums and melodic R&B, which has been the staple as of late. Moving forward, roc lee is looking at defining a sound with his fellow UPTOWN BOYBAND members, Joe Rascal and Justin Trash, for the Uptown movement in Toronto and more specifically the bridge between Korean and Toronto cultures.

With an already incredibly diverse portfolio of music, we are very excited to see how roc lee will challenge the status quo of Toronto music next. Check out his new release and follow him on the gram at @rroclee.
