The Ottawa Jazz Festival is back with another stellar lineup, kicking off later today with performances from Funk-A-Tron 5000, Judith Hill and more.
The annual festival takes place from Friday, June 21 until Monday, July 1 (Canada Day) at Ottawa’s Marion Dewar Plaza (TD Main Stage), Confederation Park (OLG Stage), and the National Arts Centre (NAC).
And while the festival is obviously not catering to fans of rap music, legendary Philly hip-hop band The Roots is headlining at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 29 on the TD Main Stage. Right after that, DJ Questlove of The Roots is playing at Confederation Park as part of the OLG Stage After Dark Series. His set starts at 10:30 p.m.

The Roots
Since 2009, The Roots have become one of the best-known bands in the world, appearing with Jimmy Fallon on his late-night TV show, where they have displayed their musical versatility by backing a wide range of guests. Prior to that, the group – founded in Philadelphia by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter in 1987 – had already developed a loyal following for their ability to seamlessly blend genres and their willingness to poke fun at what had become hip-hop clichés. Their 1999 breakthrough album, Things Fall Apart, reached #4 on the Billboard chart and sold more than a million copies, propelling The Roots into extensive touring and a number of appearances on TV and in film. The band has won three Grammy Awards.
