Last week Toronto artist Seth Dyer released his latest self-produced single titled “Take Some Time.”
This is a record about the importance of moving on from hurtful past relations. Obviously it’s gonna “take some time” to move through things. But it’s never worth your while to let the past continue affecting you in the present.
The track was inspired by a female that Seth met recently who was harbouring a lot of past hurts inside. Seth took her story and turned it into a song for anyone who’s having a tough time moving on in life.
This record comes to us as Seth gears up for the release of his forthcoming new EP titled ACT 1: The Outcast. Seth had previously planned on dropping his Unsettled project. But that’s been shelved, for the time being. Take in “Take Some Time,” and scope our Q&A with Seth below.
Q&A: Seth Dyer
HipHopCanada: Start off by telling me what this song means to you on a personal level.
Seth Dyer: I created this song because I realized there are a lot of females that get hurt and have a difficult time mending the wounds of past relationships; my friends included. I personally feel like although it takes time to heal you shouldn’t stop yourself from carrying out the rest of your life in a positive way.
HipHopCanada: Talk to me about the female and the situation that inspired you to write this.
Seth Dyer: This song was inspired by someone I met recently. I met this cool girl; really fun to be around, very social… but inside I came to discover she was very hurt from her past relationship and I felt like it was preventing her from truly enjoying life. I’m often inspired to make songs through other people’s situations when I’m not talking about my own stories.
HipHopCanada: I really like your stance on this song because you’re preaching this idea that instead of being damaged by past relationships, we should use them as an opportunity to learn and move forward.
Seth Dyer: I agree with that. I’d also say that when you stay angry or hurt you allow the person who hurt you to have control of your life. What they did is still ultimately controlling your decisions and your perspective and you’re not even with them. I believe that you should take full control of your life don’t let someone else’s decisions stop you from being the best version of yourself. I also understand it takes time to heal though.
HipHopCanada: On the production side of things, what was your vision for this beat and how did that all come together?
Seth Dyer: I kept this beat simple but made it sound thick. The piano chords are really dictating the mood and the bass helps build that thick darkness. I had the idea for the song in mind; I just had to build the environment for the idea. I made the beat, wrote the record and recorded it either the same day or the next night.
HipHopCanada: Talk to me about the delay on your Unsettled project, and why you’ve decided to move forward instead with this upcoming ACT 1: The Outcast EP.
Seth Dyer: I have about four finished projects; Unsettled being the most recent. And I’m always trying to run to the next thing but I have this amazing body of work that begins with this new EP and people need to hear it. Sometimes I get carried away, but that’s what good team members are for. They make sure I don’t jump the gun.
