One of my all-time favourite artists, Brampton’s own TOBi has had an incredibly quiet year. And by quiet, I mean the last time he released something was when he dropped “LiBRA” in December 2016.
But TOBi has finally returned with a brand new demo titled “Hidden Fences” that will appear on the season finale of HBO’s hit series Insecure this upcoming Sunday.
Produced by Nate Smith and mastered by dF, “Hidden Fences” is a funk-soul anthem about gentrification. The track was written over a year ago and stayed shelved until Insecure‘s Kier Lehman heard the song and wanted to use it on the show.
“Hidden Fences” sticks to TOBi’s M.O. of soulful new wave funk; it’s a groover with a side serving of social commentary: “She wanna move to the big city/ But not the side that’s been gentrified/ She doing Yoga every Monday morning, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday/ And not just for the exercise.”
