Following up on his Ktoe-produced banger, “Didn’t See This Coming,” Toronto rapper Delon Dior returns with a new single named after “Faygo,” a soft drink / soda manufactured in Detroit that’s been referenced in the lyrics of various Motor City rappers including Eminem, D12, Insane Clown Posse and more.
The song, produced by Brazilian Drê Turner, is an ode to getting faded and getting paid. As the chorus goes, “She runnin’ top if I say so, I mix the lean Faygo / Big Soulja, I move with the Draco / Don’t call up my phone if it ain’t about pesos.” We caught up with the Toronto up-and-comer to discuss the new record as well as other plans he has in the works. Check out the track and our Q&A with Delon below.
Q&A: Delon Dior
HipHopCanada: You mentioned the “Purple Swag” video by A$AP Rocky was an inspiration for “Faygo.” What was it about the record or video that triggered your creativity?
Delon Dior: What inspired me the most from “Purple Swag” was that he made lean sound like a luxury and integrated it with his luxurious lifestyle, which is definitely something I admire.
HipHopCanada: How did you connect with Drê Turner on the production? Any more collaborations with him on the way?
Delon Dior: I actually connected with Drê over Twitter. I found out what his Twitter name was and instantly told him what I wanted to do with the beat, after that “Faygo” was created.
HipHopCanada: Can we expect any visual support for Faygo, or the other songs we featured recently?
Delon Dior: Visuals are definitely something I want to release. My team and I have many projects in the works and visuals is one of them.
HipHopCanada: Speaking of those tracks, you seem to working closely with Ktoe. Can you touch on that relationship and what you guys have in the works?
Delon Dior: I’ve known Ktoe ever since elementary school days so whenever we link up we just vibe, you know. He’s definitely more than just a business partner to me, to say the least. And regarding the music, I could only say that 2017 is definitely our year.
HipHopCanada: There’s a lot of dope new music out right now, really amplifying the amount of talent Canada has to offer. Anything in particular that you’re checking for?
Delon Dior: I wanna see Toronto start showing more interest in underground artists and not just Drake, and other various R&B pop artists. Atlanta created some of the hottest underground rappers and I wanna show the city that not only Atlanta can make music to dab to.
HipHopCanada: The JUNO Award nominees for Rap Recording of the Year were announced today. Who would you give the win too? Was there anyone you expected to see nominated that wasn’t selected?
Delon Dior: It’s definitely a hard choice when asked these type of questions but I’d say Tory Lanez. Whenever I listen to Tory I can’t ever imagine that he was from Toronto because his sound is so different than most of the artists dropping music from here. He’s definitely an inspiration to us Toronto artists who don’t just want to sing.
HipHopCanada: What’s next for Delon Dior?
Delon Dior: I’ve got a couple projects with a clothing line called Butter On The Commas in the making. I’m also working with another Toronto artist named The True AP on “Level Up 4,” which is our next show, and I’m also working with my other producer Mike Bliss on features with another Toronto underground artist, Steezy.
