Interview: Q&A

Tory Lanez talks “B.I.D.” & working with Drake on Beats 1 World Record

Badly worded text costs Tory Lanez a Nicki Minaj feature

Fresh off the release of his “Skrt Skrt” video, Tory Lanez was on Beats 1 World Record today where he chatted with Zane Lowe about a variety of topics, including his new project Memories Don’t Die, his new song “B.I.D,” and working with Drake, including how it all started.

It sounds like it was just sincere phone conversation between the two artists, no cameras or stunts. “It wasn’t some crazy candle lit room like Mafiaoso boss moment. We just spoke.”

Check out the interview stream and the full transcript below.

The new single “B.I.D.” is available on Apple Music, Spotify and other major digital outlets.

Zane Lowe: Tory Lanez we’re about to press play on this piece of music right here. This is something very special for the people from an album which is called Memories Don’t Die, which is weeks away. We get the sneak attack, a track called “B.I.D.” Tory, what are the people about to experience?

Tory Lanez: Y’all about to experience the hottest record out, you heard? Y’all know what it is. It’s the sauce kid official, Tory Lanez. Zane Lowe, premiere that record and make sure they know it’s the hottest record out. Drop a bomb on it if you got to, you dig?

Tory Lanez: Part 1

Zane Lowe: Tory freakin’ Lanez. Tory, Tory freakin’ Lanez. What’s up man?

Tory Lanez: What’s going on brody?

Zane Lowe: What’s going on man, true to your word.We catch up once again on the eve of excitement, Tory Lanez. A World Record right here, “B.I.D”. Memories Don’t Die. It’s all very real now dude.

Tory Lanez: It’s super real. Like it’s crazy that we’re just getting so close to the album. It’s like two and a half weeks away or something like that. I’m excited about this record. It’s one of my favorite records on the project. It’s to me like the most fun record. You know what I mean the record that kind of makes you just feel good and it’s a good vibe so I’m really excited about this.

Zane Lowe: Still deep though, man. I mean fun yes, but still deep. There’s always a weight to what you do. There’s always a heaviness to what you do. A sense of yearning to what you do. You know what I mean like you’re obviously pretty deep soul bro.

Tory Lanez: Oh definitely I mean like all of my stuff come from real actual experience and moments of life. Even if it stems from a time when I was having a good time or a bad time. It’s always from a real place. The song is still from a real place no matter what I’m saying, it’s all still real.

Zane Lowe: Yeah how did you even get a chance to finish this project because you’ve been creating and now making music on this thing and there’s been anticipation for it. So I mean how do you know when it’s done? How do you even know when it’s finished?

Tory Lanez: Honestly Zane like I didn’t drop music this year for like the whole top of the year. I dropped two projects the starting of the year and all my fans know me as somebody who is constantly dropping a project and constantly making a compilation of music. So for me I kind of felt like this time around this album, I wanted to make sure it was super perfect. I wanted to make sure that all the things that I didn’t do on the first album, I conquered on this album. All the places that I lack and I was weak at, I wanted to conquer this time. And so it took me a little bit extra longer because I wanted to make sure. It was just every single thing now the album is so deep that and not even from a conscious stand point, it’s just like the album takes you into so many places musically that it’s such a ride and a journey and it is something that you can tap into at any given time at any situation any any kind of event anything is going on. I have music for it at that time and moment and that’s why the album took so long.

Tory Lanez: Part 2

Zane Lowe: Do you have a favorite memory or something of collaborating with someone or a moment in the studio where it all came together and you knew that was all time?

Tory Lanez: As far as like not necessarily for this album but I think as far as me and Drake kind of coming together and just talking and getting to know each other and just stuff like that. I think that was a big moment for music in general.

Zane Lowe: How did that happen? How did that actually happen because it felt like that conversation was being had very loud in public by other people. So how did you two actually dead all this all the noise and get so

Tory Lanez: We just spoke. We just spoke as two men, that was it. It wasn’t some crazy like candle lit room like Mafiaoso boss moment. We just spoke. We never really had too much conversation. I think now that we spoke more it’s kind of like all of the things that he goes through I go through. I kind of go through probably on a way smaller scale because I’m not at that level in my career where he is but I think there’s a lot of similarities between us as people that we probably just never thought was there before but at the end of the day it is, so that was a good moment. Also just like coming together and finally having a project where there’s two artists that I’m about to bring out this year and they’re about to be beside me rocking and so Davo and Mansa. This is the first project where I actually had my people with me on it.

Zane Lowe: It wasn’t all on your shoulders

Tory Lanez: Yeah and they’re holding and they own. It’s not like they’re just coming in and doing one or two things like they’re both holding their own. That’s a big thing for me. This is the first time I’ve had two artists that are actually on paper that are with us and with the umbrella and they’re on the music now.

Zane Lowe: Dude, I see the dates coming in, Rolling Loud is already in. There’s a few other things started pop in left, right and center. I imagine there’s a snowball effect in terms of supporting this album on the road because we all know that you’re an electrifying performer on stage and that you give everything you got. Are you feeling match ready? Are you game fit?

Tory Lanez: Oh I feel incredible. For me personally honestly even with performances like I stop performing towards the end of last year and I said I’m not performing until there’s new music out because when my fans see me again and my family see me again —I call them my family— when my family sees me again, they got to know it’s like yo he’s coming here with that s*** because what’s on the album is that s***. It’s not no bulls***, it’s that s***. They got to know when I come back, I coming back with that and nothing less. Of course I’m going to have all of other hits and all of the things that I performed as well. But you got to know I’m coming back strong you’re not about to see the same show. You’re about to see my show times fifty. They thought I was crazy before, Zane I’m to but ballistic. I’m crazy out here.
