After being featured on a bonus track on the posthumous full-length album from his older brother Smoke Dawg, newcomer Young Smoke is making his mark with his recently released “Days By Da Rabba” single.
YouTube comments have been quick to point out similarities in the two Smoke brothers – both in look and style – with many also showing appreciation for the way Smoke’s memory is being honoured by his younger sibling.
The Director Mo-powered video was released on Dec. 19 and has brought in close to 90K streams since. “Days By Da Rabba” was recorded by Farhan and 5ive, and mixed and mastered by Amir Jamm. The song has yet to hit streaming platforms, but should be available in the near future.
Young Smoke’s older brother Jahvante “Smoke Dawg” Smart, a member of the 878 Halal Gang, was a well-known Toronto artist and one of the most successful rappers coming out of the city. He was killed on June 30, along with Koba Prime (aka Kosi Modekwe), Brand Manager of Toronto’s Prime collective, outside a nightclub on Toronto’s Queen Street West. Within a couple of weeks, Toronto police issued a warrant for Abdulkadir Handule, 22, for two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. There was also a second suspect but they couldn’t be named since they were only 16. Handule is currently sitting on the Toronto Police Service’s Most Wanted list and there hasn’t been an update from mainstream media since July.
With a highly successful Aj Tracey-supported single, “No Discussion” (produced by Murda Beatz), Smoke Dawg’s posthumous album Struggle Before Glory was released independently on Nov. 30, 2018. Young Smoke is featured on the bonus track, “Smokey World.”
