YouTube is shaking things up with the launch of some new music specific initiatives including YouTube Charts which will focus on artists and music that is trending here in Canada.
“YouTube Charts are a reflection of the most expansive music platform in the world. With over 1 billion music users a week. YouTube is a voice for all music fans, driven purely by user consumption – not weighted to subscribers, airplay or sales data. The best part? These lists will be updated multiple times a day so the charts are always showcasing the hottest content.”
Right now you can find the Top 10 Trending in Canada chart, the Top Songs chart, the Top Music Videos chart, and the Top Artists chart. At the time of this posting, Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” was sitting in the No. 1 spot for all four charts. Drake has 2 tracks (“God’s Plan” and “Nice For What”) in the Top Songs and Top Music Videos chart, and falls in at No. 3 on the Top Artists chart behind Ed Sheeran and Glover.
The charts can be found at https://charts.youtube.com.
Here’s a break down of each one listed.
Trending (NEW): What’s new and hot in music right now
The new Trending chart is updated multiple times a day to provide a unique, real time view of the hottest new music fans are enjoying. The Trending chart is YouTube’s first dedicated external signal of the most viewed new music on the platform, providing an instant snapshot of what users are reacting to.
Top Songs: The most played songs on YouTube
The Top Songs chart highlights the number of views of a song on YouTube. Calculated by combining all official versions of a song (including the official music video, official song used in user generated content and lyric videos), the Top Songs chart reflects how users are consuming music on the platform and the multiple ways artists are using YouTube to share their music. The Top Songs chart is updated weekly on Sunday at 12 p.m. PST.
Top Artists: The biggest artists on YouTube
The Top Artists chart highlights the most popular artists on YouTube, based on the total views of their entire discography – official music videos, official song user generated content, official live performances, remixes, lyric videos, album tracks, and collaborations. Top Artists is updated weekly on Sunday at 12 p.m. PST.
Top Music Videos: The most viewed music videos
The Top Music Videos chart celebrates the music video experience on YouTube, highlighting the most viewed official music videos on the platform. Top Videos is updated weekly on Sunday at 12 p.m. PST.
Artist on the Rise: Jessie Reyez
YouTube also announced that Canadian singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez has been chosen as their first-ever global Artist on the Rise – a new program from YouTube that will promote a diverse lineup of music’s most important new voices across all genres, connecting them with fans worldwide through in-product promotion and programming, out-of-home, social and fan events at YouTube Spaces.
The Artist on the Rise Trending tab will also continue to feature three songs a week from emerging artists that are making a significant impact on YouTube.
“First off, thank you YouTube. I feel honored — to have ‘inaugural’ anywhere near my name is dope, and on Artist on the Rise is even crazier. I hope everyone enjoys what we’re making… and if not, feel free to blow up the comments, lol” – Jessie Reyez
Yesterday, Reyez released the video for her song “Body Count.” Peep it below.
Music in this Video
Lastly, YouTube is introducing a new feature that will make it easier for music fans to credit “the heroes who contributed to the music you love.”
Meaning, a new ‘Music in this video’ feature will provide credits and music discovery information on both music videos and – for the first time ever on any platform – fan-uploaded content that features recorded music.
For over half a billion videos that contain music, when you click ‘Show more,’ you’ll see more detail about the artists and songwriters, the labels and publishers who represent them, including a link to the Official Artist Channel and official music video when available.
“When a song catches your ear in a video, you can now learn more and dive in deeper by following a link to the official video when available to discover even more about the creators of the song you’re digging.”
